WebAbout Eudialyte Group Hide. X (1) and X (2) = Cl, F, H 2 O, OH, CO 3, SO 4, AlO 4, or MnO 4. A complex (or extremely complex) group of trigonal cyclosilicates with both three-fold (Si 3 O 9) 6- and nine-fold (Si 9 O 27) 18- rings. In some members, two nine-fold rings are bridged by a single silicon atom to give a [ (Si 9 O 27) 2 SiO] 34- group. Eudialyte is used as a minor ore of zirconium. Another use of eudialyte is as a minor gemstone, but this use is limited by its rarity, which is compounded by its poor crystal habit. These factors make eudialyte of primary interest as a collector's mineral. Eudialyte typically has a significant content of U, Pb, Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, and rare earth elements (REE). Because of this, geoscientists use eudialyte as a geochronometer to date and investigate the genesis of the host rocks.
